Anthony Joshua agrees to terms for potential Deontay Wilder bout, but contract pending

Posted : 11 September 2023
Terms have been agreed for a potential fight between Anthony Joshua and Deontay Wilder, but the official contract is pending, according to promoter Eddie Hearn. The fight, which has been heavily speculated for December in Saudi Arabia, hinges on the contract being finalized.

Hearn mentioned that if the contract negotiations drag on, Joshua might opt for a fight with Tyson Fury or a rematch with Andy Ruiz Jr instead. Joshua, coming off two wins this year, is eager to remain active and could fight as early as December, potentially marking his third fight in eight months. Hearn also suggested that Joshua could fight outside of England, possibly at Madison Square Garden or in the Middle East.

The potential Joshua vs. Wilder fight has been in the works, with terms and finances reportedly agreed upon. However, Hearn noted complications arising from a "change of environment" in Saudi Arabia's boxing operators.

Joshua, a former two-time heavyweight champion, is keen on the Wilder bout but doesn't want to wait indefinitely for the contract. Hearn expressed the possibility of Joshua facing Fury if the Wilder fight doesn't materialize, emphasizing Joshua's desire to stay active.

Hearn also mentioned potential opponents for Joshua, including Andy Ruiz Jr and Filip Hrgovic. He indicated that the fight may not take place in England, considering Joshua's recent bouts at The O2 Arena.

Joshua's next opponent and location are contingent on the contract negotiations for the Wilder fight and Joshua's preference for staying active in the heavyweight division.
