Nigeria wrestling captain and Olympic silver medalist Blessing Oborodudu has set her sights on defending her African Games gold medal from four years ago in Rabat ahead of the 2023 edition in Accra.
Oborodudu won gold in the 68kg and 76kg women’s freestyle events and is ready to give her 100% in the Ghanaian capital.
“Going for the African Games, my expectation is to perform my best, and, by the special grace of God, I will defend my title, which is the gold medal,” she stated.
Oborodudu is also a gold medalist in the 76kg women’s freestyle at the 2019 African Wrestling Championships in Hammamet, Tunisia, and a silver medalist at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia.
A 20-person contingent, led by Nigeria Wrestling Federation President Daniel Igali, departed their preparatory base in Yenegoa on Tuesday for nearby Port Harcourt, where they boarded a flight to Abuja before finally departing for Accra on Wednesday.
Igali is optimistic about the wrestling athletes' chances of impressing at the games.
“This is the African Games, and as you know, our athletes have been in a training camp here in Yenagoa, and I think the expectation we have from the athletes is for everyone to give their best efforts,” he said.
“We believe that the work we’ve done in the past few weeks with 100 per cent performance would bring good fruits to Nigeria.”
The 2023 African Games will commence on March 8 in the Ghanaian capital city of Accra, with the wrestling event scheduled from March 9 to March 11.
