Village Buzzers took the first quarter 16-14, before Titans Academy rallied back to win the second quarter 30-27.

The Titans fought hard in the third quarter to edge it by just two points, 43-41.

In the final quarter, the Titans secured the victory with a 12-point lead, finishing the game 64-52.

Village Buzzers had previously won their first game against AGF of Kaduna, 59-57.

Omar Kona, Coach of Village Buzzers, said the game was a fair contest, although he regretted his team’s missed chances.

“We will review our mistakes, regroup, and improve for our next match with our key players returning, and we hope to come back with a win.”

“The game is being played on a home-and-away basis, and we will be playing the return leg in the third week against AGF of Kaduna on Nov. 17 at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja,” he added.

He described the inaugural WESIE basketball league as a groundbreaking initiative.

“I commend the organizers for reviving grassroots basketball in Nigeria, as it has brought a new dimension to the sport, keeping players engaged. We appreciate their efforts,” he said.

On her part, Mary Amos, the captain of Titans Academy, said the game was tough, noting that her side had to dig deep to ensure the win.

“Our team’s experience and skill gave us the edge over our opponents, and it paid off.”

“We are proud to start our WESIE Basketball League debut with a win and look forward to winning subsequent matches,” she said.

Fifteen teams are participating in the tournament across the country, including Life League of Lagos, Victoria Queens of Lagos, FOBA of Abeokuta, Hoop Dreams of Ibadan, Books and Balls of Osogbo, Hope Academy of Akure, and Dream Chasers of Adamawa.

Others are Divine Speed of Warri, Impressions Basketball Academy of Asaba, Coal City of Enugu, Suns Sparks of Jos, Village Buzzers of Abuja, Titans Academy of Abuja, AGF of Kaduna, and Spartans of Taraba.

The games will be played on weekends for the next six weeks, as teams clash in a home-and-away format.

The WESIE league is designed exclusively for players over 18 years old and aims to bridge the gender gap in sports.
