Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr has officially inked a two-year contract extension, as announced by the team. While the terms of the deal were not disclosed, reports say it to be $53 million, making Kerr the highest-paid coach in NBA history. More significantly, the extension aligns Kerr's contract with the remaining two years on franchise superstar Stephen Curry's deal, providing stability for the team during a transitional period.
Addressing the extension, Kerr expressed comfort with the two-year commitment, noting the unique situation of the team transitioning between eras. Kerr stated, "We're in a really unique situation where we have an era that's winding down and another that's coming. We're trying to make them merge and make the most of that this year and next year... let's keep it rolling for another couple of years and then reassess it." Kerr's previous deal was set to expire at the end of the current season, and negotiations with Golden State general manager Mike Dunleavy Jr. spanned several months.
Since joining the Warriors in 2014, Kerr has been a pivotal figure in crafting the team's dynasty around players like Curry, Draymond Green, and Klay Thompson. This season, Kerr faced the challenge of blending the veteran core with a new generation of talent.
Despite the team experiencing close losses, Kerr expressed his enjoyment coaching this group, finding the season both exciting and challenging. Kerr, with four titles and six NBA Finals appearances, recently achieved his 500th coaching win on Feb. 15, making him the fifth-fastest coach in history to reach this milestone. Additionally, he serves as Team USA's national coach.
Reflecting on Kerr's impact, Green emphasized the significance of having Kerr as the coach, stating, "[I] Wouldn't want to finish my time here with any other coach. What he's meant to this franchise... the winning ways that he brought here, you can't replace that... He got what he deserved."
