Former NBA player Terrence Williams, who was chosen 11th overall in the 2009 draft, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for insurance fraud amounting to approximately $5 million.
Williams, who played for teams like the New Jersey Nets, Houston, Sacramento, and Boston, pleaded guilty to the charges and expressed remorse for his actions, attributing them to "stupidity and greed." He also cited an addiction to painkillers resulting from injuries sustained during his basketball career.
Prosecutors revealed that Williams not only engaged in forgery and cheating but also stole identities and used threats to further his criminal activities, leading to his imprisonment. He was previously incarcerated in May 2022 after sending threatening messages to potential trial witnesses.
The case, which surfaced two years ago, involved a total of 18 former NBA players, including Maccabi Tel Aviv's former players Will Bynum and Allen Anderson. The indictment accused them of filing fraudulent insurance claims for medical treatments, including dental procedures, that they never received. In total, the defendants received $2.5 million from insurance payouts. So far, 13 of the players involved have pleaded guilty.
Williams was the mastermind behind the scheme, recruiting other players, providing instructions for forging documents, and even pretending to be an insurance company employee to facilitate the fraud. In addition to the prison sentence, he will forfeit $650,000 from his bank account and pay a $5.2 million fine.
Other notable players implicated in the fraudulent operation include Tony Allen, Shannon Brown of the Los Angeles Lakers, NBA champion Glen Davis, Sebastian Telfair, a renowned New York street basketball legend, and Darius Miles, who was selected third overall in the 2000 NBA Draft and earned a spot on the All-Rookie Team in the 2001-2002 season.
