Nigeria's senior male basketball team, D'Tigers, will not participate in the FIBA Afrobasket Qualifiers that begin on Friday in Tunisia. The Nigeria Basketball Federation cited a lack of funds to prepare the team for the tournament, attributing it to the Ministry of Sports' failure to provide the NBBF with the necessary funds for the qualifiers.
In recent times, both the female and male national basketball teams have faced challenges in preparing for major continental and global championships due to a chronic lack of funds. Despite this, the financial responsibility of ensuring national teams' participation in these tournaments has been personally shouldered by the President of NBBF, Engr. Musa Kida.
While Kida, who has yet to be refunded the billions of naira he has spent on the participation of various national teams, is unable to raise more funds for the latest national assignment, the Ministry of Sports has not been able to allocate the needed funds. They cite a lack of adequate funds to support several other national engagements, including the forthcoming All Africa Games in Accra, Ghana, in March.
The NBBF board appeals to the ever-growing fans and lovers of the game in Nigeria and the diaspora to understand the dire situation it finds itself in due to the economic challenges faced by the country. The NBBF promises to redouble its efforts and commitments to the continued growth of the game in Nigeria.
