Serbia wins FIBA U19 Basketball World Cup 2023 group stage with 17 points

Posted : 28 June 2023
The FIBA U19 Basketball World Cup 2023 group stage witnessed some intense matches and near upsets. Serbia and Brazil managed to avoid slip-ups just before the Round of 16, with Serbia emerging as one of the four undefeated teams in the tournament.

In an impressive display of character, Serbia staged a massive comeback against Japan, overcoming a 10-point deficit in the third quarter with a remarkable 21-0 run. Ilija Milijasevic and Lazar Djokovic were instrumental in Serbia's victory, contributing 17 points each. Akira Jacobs scored 16 points for Japan in the losing effort.

Brazil secured second place in Group C with a hard-fought 73-67 victory over Egypt, narrowly avoiding a second consecutive defeat. Reynan Santos and Vitor Da Silva stepped up for Brazil in the closing minutes, leading their team to an 11-2 run that secured the win.

Both players contributed 11 points, while Leandro Cardoso added 12 points. Ibrahim Zahran's 16-point performance wasn't enough to lift Egypt, who finished the group stage without a win.

France rebounded strongly after a loss to Spain, defeating Canada 80-68 to secure second place in Group A. A dominant 24-3 run in the second half allowed France to establish a comfortable lead.

Melvin Ajinca led the French team with 23 points, supported by Zacharie Perrin's double-double of 15 points and 15 rebounds. Despite Xaivian Lee's 15-point contribution, Canada suffered their second defeat and settled for third place in the group.

Slovenia faced a tough challenge against Madagascar but managed to hold on for a 74-71 victory, securing second place in Group B. Although Slovenia had a 15-point lead in the second half, they allowed a comeback by Madagascar, surrendering a 10-point lead in the fourth quarter.

Jan Vide's 25 points and Jan Zemljic's all-around performance (15 points, 5 rebounds, and 7 assists) proved crucial for Slovenia's win. Fabrizio Heritiana led Madagascar with 18 points. Slovenia's focus will be on maintaining their performance as they move forward in the tournament.
