Serbia, the defending champions, secured their place in the quarter-finals after defeating Great Britain in the final qualification game. Their victory sets up an exciting clash with Belgium, while Germany's win against Slovakia allows them to make a return to the top eight for the first time since 1997.
Although the game between Serbia and Great Britain wasn't a display of high-scoring and aesthetically pleasing basketball, it was captivating in its own right. Serbia had to fight hard to maintain their title defense and ultimately secured a hard-fought 66-60 victory against the British team. Despite struggling with 14 missed free throws, Serbia's Jovana Nogic played a crucial role, leading her team with 16 points. Great Britain's Temi Fagbenle contributed 20 points and 7 rebounds in a commendable effort.
In other news, Marie Guelich played a pivotal role in her team's 79-69 victory. With an impressive performance, Guelich registered 26 points, 9 rebounds, and 4 assists, propelling Germany to their third win out of four games in the tournament. Germany gradually took control of the contest, primarily due to their strong defense, and maintained their lead throughout the game. Leonie Fiebich also had a notable performance with 15 points, 8 rebounds, and 5 assists. Despite Ivana Jakubcova's team-high 16 points for Slovakia, their journey in the tournament came to an end.
The quarter-final matches will take place at the Stozice Arena in Ljubljana on Thursday, June 22, with the following pairings:
Hungary vs Czech Republic
Spain vs Germany
France vs Montenegro
Belgium vs Serbia
