Russell Westbrook joins 49ers Enterprises consortium to acquire Leeds United

Russell Westbrook, the NBA All-Star and LA Clippers point guard, has joined the consortium led by 49ers Enterprises in their bid to acquire full control of Leeds United. Westbrook, ranked as the 14th highest-paid athlete globally, follows golfers Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas as minor stakeholders in the club.
49ers Enterprises initially invested in Leeds United in 2018, gradually increasing their stake from 15% to 44%. They have now agreed to purchase the controlling stake from Andrea Radrizzani, the current owner of the Championship club. However, the takeover is still pending ratification by the English Football League.
Speaking at a sports and entertainment summit, Westbrook revealed that he had discussions with the existing partners, including the 49ers, to understand the deal and explore how they could make a difference together. He considered various aspects of the opportunity alongside his business partner before deciding to join the consortium.
The original agreement between 49ers Enterprises and Radrizzani was valued at £400 million, but it was renegotiated to £170 million after Leeds United's relegation from the Premier League. Westbrook's involvement adds to the growing list of high-profile figures associated with the club's potential ownership change.
