Rivers Hoopers win Louis Edem Invitational Basketball Tournament in Lagos
Posted : 05 September 2023
Rivers Hoopers clinched the men's Louis Edem invitational basketball 2023 tournament championship with a resounding 74-56 victory over Ghana's Spintex in the final. This triumph brings relief to Nigerian sports enthusiasts who had recently experienced heartbreak at the hands of Ghanaian football teams, with whom Nigeria shares a bitter rivalry.
In a span of just one week, two Nigerian teams suffered defeats to their Ghanaian counterparts in African club football competitions. Firstly, Remo Stars FC exited the CAF Champions League qualifying stage following a penalty shootout loss to Ghana's Medeama. Additionally, Nigerian champions Delta Queens faced a 0-1 defeat at home to Ghana's Ampem Darkoa in the final of the West Africa Zone B CAF Women's Champions League Qualifying in Edo, causing them to miss out on the sole ticket to the main tournament in Cote d'Ivoire.
The pain of these football losses was somewhat alleviated by the positive basketball outcomes, as Coach Ogo Odaudu led Hoopers to a championship victory in the Louis Edem competition. This win also put an end to a three-tournament losing streak for Coach Odaudu, who had previously experienced setbacks in the Sam Oguche tournament, NBBF Final 8, and the first edition of the Louis Edem tournament held in February.
Hoopers maintained an unbeaten record from the group stage all the way to the final, where they convincingly defeated the Ghanaian team, Spintex. In the women's final, First Bank of Lagos secured the title by defeating MFM, also based in Lagos, with a score of 46-39. The victory was celebrated at the Indoor Sports Hall of the National Stadium in Lagos.
