Nigeria's Rivers Hoopers secured their first-ever spot in the Basketball Africa League (BAL) semifinals by defeating Tunisia's US Monastir 92-88. Angola's Petro de Luanda also advanced to the semifinals, narrowly edging out Senegal's AS Douanes 66-65. This development means that all former BAL champions have been eliminated from the tournament, and three of the four semifinalists are from regions outside of North Africa.
The evening kicked off with a match between the fourth-seeded Rivers Hoopers and the fifth-seeded US Monastir. Although Monastir led by one point at the end of the first quarter, the Hoopers, driven by an inspired performance from Will Perry, regained control in the second quarter and maintained a lead of 45-40 by halftime. Despite a strong third quarter from Monastir's Chris Crawford, the Hoopers managed to stay ahead, leading 68-62 going into the final quarter.
In the final quarter, Kelvin Amayo, who had a quiet first half, became instrumental for the Hoopers. Along with Perry, Amayo made crucial shots that extended their lead to 85-73. Monastir attempted a late comeback with a 7-0 run, but Perry's free throw with just over 30 seconds left sealed the victory for the Hoopers. Perry finished the game with 33 points, while Amayo and Peter Olisemeka contributed 18 points each, and Devine Eke added 16 points.
In the second game, Petro de Luanda faced AS Douanes in a tightly contested match. Petro led at the end of the first quarter, but Douanes closed the gap by halftime, trailing by just three points. Douanes took control in the third quarter, leading by 14 points at one stage, but Petro rallied in the fourth quarter. Nick Faust's three-pointer tied the game at 64-64 with 38.4 seconds left, and Petro soon took a 66-65 lead, which they maintained to advance to the semifinals. Petro de Luanda will face South Africa's Cape Town Tigers, while Rivers Hoopers will compete against Libya's Al Ahly Benghazi in the semifinals on Wednesday.
