Rivers Hoopers, champions of the Nigeria Premier Basketball League, have further solidified their reputation by adding yet another title to their already extensive trophy cabinet.
Rivers Hoopers emerged as winners of the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) Independence Day Basketball Championship.
The Kingsmen delivered a dominant performance in the final, defeating the City Chiefs with a decisive 72-59 victory at the Mo Arena.
The Hoopers were unquestionably the standout team of the tournament, winning all six games they played.
The General Manager of the club, Ifie Ozaka, alongside Rivers State Sports Commissioner Barr. Chris Green—himself a former accomplished basketball player—praised the Hoopers' accomplishments. Green, a three-time Commissioner of Sports in Rivers State, emphasized that this is just the beginning of the Hoopers' journey toward total dominance.
"I am not surprised by the recent accomplishments of Rivers Hoopers," said Green. "Rivers Hoopers is currently not just the best and most professionally-run basketball club in Nigeria, but also one of the best in Africa today.
"Recall the performances of the club in this year's Africa Basketball League (BAL), where they were just two matches away from being crowned champions of Africa.
"The victory in Abuja shows that this club isn't ready to rest on past glories but will instead continue to progress as it aims to emerge as Nulli secundus in the community of basketball institutions in Africa," he said.
Next for Rivers Hoopers is a return to Port Harcourt to prepare for Phase One of the 2024 Nigeria Premier Basketball League, scheduled in two weeks' time in Benin, Edo State.
