Phoenix Mercury guard Diana Taurasi made history in the WNBA on Thursday, becoming the first player to reach 10,000 career points.
During Mercury's 91-71 victory against Atlanta Dream, the 41-year-old Taurasi achieved the milestone with a three-point shot in the third quarter. Not only did she reach the record-breaking feat, but she also displayed an outstanding performance, scoring a total of 42 points, making her the oldest player in WNBA history to achieve a 40-point game.
Reflecting on her achievement, Taurasi credited her team and her form on the night: "I just felt good, and they were looking for me."
With her remarkable performance, Taurasi now has a total of 10,024 career points, further solidifying her legacy as one of the greatest players in WNBA history. She is a three-time WNBA champion and a two-time WNBA finals Most Valuable Player.
Taurasi entered the game needing 18 points to reach the 10,000 mark, and she quickly achieved that goal, reaching double digits by halftime. As the game progressed, she continued to make significant contributions, capping off the historic moment with a two-point lay-up and a three-pointer.
WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert congratulated Taurasi, acknowledging her remarkable career and dedication to the game: "She continues to author new chapters in an illustrious WNBA career.
