Free agent forward Paul George has agreed to a significant four-year, $212 million maximum contract with the Philadelphia 76ers, according to sources. This move brings George back to the Eastern Conference, where he will join forces with MVP center Joel Embiid and All-Star guard Tyrese Maxey in a bid to challenge the reigning NBA champions, the Boston Celtics.
Sources indicated that George's deal includes a player option for the final season in 2027-28, providing flexibility moving forward. His decision to join the 76ers followed a meeting in Los Angeles with team executives, including owner Josh Harris, president of basketball operations Daryl Morey, general manager Elton Brand, and Sixers legend Julius Erving. Peter Dinwiddie, a familiar face from George's tenure with the Indiana Pacers, also attended, underlining the team's effort to secure his commitment.
George, a nine-time All-Star at 34 years old, spent the past five seasons with the LA Clippers, averaging impressive stats of 23 points, 6 rebounds, 4.5 assists, and 1.5 steals over 263 regular-season games. Despite ongoing negotiations with the Clippers, which failed to reach an agreement, George sought a four-year deal while the Clippers offered three, ultimately leading to his departure.
In addition to George, the 76ers have bolstered their roster with signings including shooting guard Kelly Oubre Jr. on a two-year, $16.3 million deal, along with veteran guard Eric Gordon and center Andre Drummond. George's arrival significantly enhances Philadelphia's lineup, positioning them as serious contenders in the Eastern Conference against formidable rivals like the Celtics.
