Orlando Magic's defensive dominance prevails against Phoenix Suns with 113-98 victory

Posted : 29 January 2024

The Orlando Magic secured a 113-98 victory over the Phoenix Suns, led by Paolo Banchero's 26 points. Despite Devin Booker's impressive 44-point performance, the Suns struggled in the fourth quarter, going over eight minutes without a field goal and scoring only four points in the final 10 minutes.

The Magic's defensive lineup, featuring tall players like Banchero, Franz Wagner, Moritz Wagner, and Jonathan Isaac, played a crucial role in shutting down the Suns in the fourth quarter.

Phoenix coach Frank Vogel acknowledged the Magic's unique lineup, stating that their massive team presented challenges for opponents. Booker, despite his 44-point effort, faced a physical game throughout, scoring only two points in the fourth quarter.

The Suns had a dismal 13-point fourth quarter, shooting 5 for 18 with seven turnovers. The Magic's defensive effort, particularly in the fourth quarter, impressed players like Isaac, who contributed with two of the team's seven blocks.

Moritz Wagner, coming off the bench, made a significant impact with 16 points and 12 rebounds in 23 minutes. Magic coach Jamahl Mosley emphasized the importance of Wagner's contributions, especially on the offensive glass, providing extra possessions against an elite scoring team.

Kevin Durant, limited to 15 points and facing seven turnovers, acknowledged his mistakes, stating that his decision-making set a bad precedent for the team. Despite the Suns shooting 56% overall, their limited three-point attempts and the Magic's defensive strategy contributed to their downfall.
