The Lagos State Basketball Association has announced that the inaugural Governor's Cup basketball competition will be held from December 18 to 31, 2023.
The competition, which will feature both male and female teams, will take place at six venues across the state.
Organizers announced that the registration fee ranges from Twenty thousand naira (#20,000) for affiliated clubs to Thirty thousand naira (#30,000) for non-affiliated clubs. The closing date for registration is December 8, 2023.
Led by Chairperson Ms. Barbara Atinuke Harper, the Lagos Basketball Association stated that the competition is organized to identify and develop talented young male and female basketball players.
Speaking, Vice-chairman and Technical Committee Chairman Olumide Oyedeji said the Association has finalized plans to stage the first Governor's Cup basketball competition. Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwoolu, is expected to grace the occasion.
"We are promoting the vision of the Lagos State governor and the state's Sports Commission with this grassroots basketball competition," Oyedeji said.
"It's a platform created to discover talented basketball players and nurture them to stardom. We are determined in providing the most engaging, exciting, and positive platform for players to enjoy healthy grassroots basketball competition in Lagos. This will enable the sport to fulfill its vast potential and have a positive social impact across Lagos city."
The tournament, which is organized for young male and female basketball players, will commence on December 18 and conclude on December 31. It will take place at six different venues across Lagos. The registration deadline is December 8.
Cash rewards and awards will be presented to the best-performing individuals and clubs.
