The President of the Nigeria Wheelchair Basketball Federation, Seyi Johnson, has debunked reports circulating that the Ogun State Government has elevated wheelchair basketball to one of the compulsory sports for the forthcoming 2024 National Sports Festival, tagged the Gateway Games.
The Wheelchair Basketball boss clarified that the report was false and misrepresented what transpired at the Extraordinary National Council of State meeting, which was successfully held in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
"I want to use this medium to set the record straight: there was never a time when wheelchair basketball was listed by Ogun State as a compulsory sport at the Gateway Games," he said.
"Nothing like that happened, and the communiqué issued after the Extraordinary Council meeting was very clear about all the decisions made at the council meeting regarding the sports festival in Ogun State and subsequent festivals."
"Once again, I want to plead with our friends in the media to always verify their information before going public to avoid the wrong dissemination of information and misleading headlines."
"It was a very fruitful deliberation on issues concerning the betterment of the upcoming sports festival in Ogun State and how future games can be improved to align with the new vision of the current leadership of the National Sports Commission."
"In the Nigeria wheelchair basketball family, we commend the new vision for sports in the country, and we fully align with the new focus," he concluded.
He stressed that wheelchair basketball is one of the optional sports at the upcoming festival, and that has not changed.
The 22nd edition of the National Sports Festival in Ogun State is expected to be held from May 16–30, 2025.
