Nigeria's foremost sports marketing company, Nilayo Sports Management Limited, has disclosed its plan to host the first edition of the 3x3 Wheelchair Basketball Championship in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
The president of the Nigeria Wheelchair Basketball Federation, Seyi Johnson, said yesterday in Lagos that the company has opted to host the championship, the first in eight years, from June 22nd to 23rd, 2023.
Johnson said this was done in a bid to bring life back to the Federation and give a sense of belonging to the players across the country, who had been inactive for a number of years.
He noted that there was an urgent need to return the players who were the best in the continent of Africa and a shining light at the world level, at both the men's and women's categories, before the long inactivity, back to competitions and put an end to the forced holidays to which they had been subjected over the years.
"I am very happy seeing the federation return to what it used to be in the last eight years and most delighted that the former Federation president, when the sport was at its highest point on the continent and indeed on the world stage, Bukola Olopade, the Group Managing Director of Nilayo Sports Management Limited, is championing the rebirth of wheelchair basketball sport in Nigeria."
"We are making a passionate appeal to corporate Nigeria to join forces with the federation in the urgent bid to bring back wheelchair basketball in Nigeria," the federation president, Seyi Johnson, said.
