Posted : 05 August 2024

Nigeria’s Senior National Women’s Basketball Team, D’Tigress, on Sunday defeated Canada 79-70 at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris to advance to the quarter-finals of their event.

D’Tigress, who had defeated Australia in the opening game of their group, lost to France in their second game before rallying to beat the Canadians in their final group match.

With this victory, D’Tigress will be making their first appearance in the quarter-finals in the history of the Games.

D’Tigress’s Ezinne Kalu led the team with a stellar performance, recording 21 points to help advance to their first-ever quarter-finals.

Both teams were evenly matched in the first quarter, ending in a 18-18 tie. Canada, who had not yet won in the group stage, pushed hard in the second quarter and were rewarded with a 23-19 lead.

However, D’Tigress outclassed Canada in the third quarter, extending their lead with a dominant 23-5 performance.

They maintained their lead in the fourth quarter, preventing Canada from staging a comeback or getting back into the game.

Olamide Ayomikun, a basketball prodigy, praised Nigeria's performance, stating that they deserved the victory and should be commended for their improvement.

“It was a very competitive game. Nigeria showed class and surely deserves to be in the quarter-finals. I wish them well and hope they continue their noble heroics,” Ayomikun said.

Another basketball enthusiast, Timothy Adaku, also praised the team, saying, “Their performance was top-notch. They deserved to beat Canada. This is a great win for them. They played with determination and made their opponents look small. If they approach the quarter-finals the same way they played today, they can go all the way to the finals,” Adaku said.
