Following their scintillating performance at the ongoing Paris 2024 Olympics, which included wins over Australia and Canada, Nigeria’s women’s basketball team has been rewarded with a four-place rise in the new FIBA Power Ranking.
D’Tigress has now moved up from 12th to 8th place, showcasing their dominance.
Before the Olympic Games, D’Tigress was the lowest-ranked team among the 12 nations competing. However, their impressive showings in the group stage significantly boosted their standing.
Under the guidance of coach Rena Wakama, D’Tigress finished third in Group B, securing notable victories against Australia and Canada, despite a loss to France.
The team kicked off their Olympic campaign with a historic 75-62 win over Australia on July 29, marking their first Olympic win since Athens 2004. Although they faced a setback with a 75-54 loss to France in their second match, they rebounded strongly with a 79-70 victory over Canada in their final group-stage game.
D’Tigress’ rise in the rankings is a testament to their resilience and skill, reflecting their ability to compete with and overcome higher-ranked teams.
Their performance has not only elevated their global standing but also inspired fans and athletes back home in Nigeria.
However, D’Tigress was unable to surpass the highest-ranked team in the Olympics, the USA, as they bowed out gallantly in the quarterfinals last night.
