Nigeria's representative in Women's Basketball at the ongoing Paris 2024 Olympics, D’Tigress, now faces a significant challenge to secure a spot in the semi-finals as Team USA comes into the fray.
The Rena Wakama-led team qualified for Nigeria’s first-ever appearance in the quarter-finals of the Olympic basketball tournament after defeating Canada 79-70 in their final group game on Sunday.
The team secured five classification points and was at the top of Group B until Australia defeated France 79-72 in another group game.
This loss dropped D’Tigress to third place in the group, with France and Australia advancing above them in the seeding for the quarter-finals.
Nigeria is scheduled to face the US, the defending champions, on August 7 at 9:30 p.m. (8:30 p.m. Nigerian time).
This game will mark the second time both nations face each other at the Olympic Games.
At the Tokyo Olympics, D’Tigress lost to the Americans by 9 points in their opening group game.
The teams also competed in the 2024 Olympics qualifiers, where D’Tigress suffered a heavy defeat to the Americans.
In other quarter-final games, Serbia will play against Australia, Spain will take on Belgium, and France will battle with Germany.
