Nigeria and 15 other African countries will participate in the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 qualifiers, which tip off in November.
After rising from the ‘dead,’ so to speak, to secure a slot in the AfroBasket 2025 Championship scheduled for August 12-24 in Angola, D’Tigers will be seeking to qualify for the FIBA World Cup in 2027 in Qatar after failing to qualify for the 2023 finals co-hosted by Japan, Indonesia, and the Philippines.
All 15 other countries that secured their tickets to the AfroBasket 2025 Championship have also qualified for the FIBA World Cup 2027 qualifiers.
These countries are Angola, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Côte d’Ivoire, DR Congo, Egypt, Guinea, Libya, Madagascar, Mali, Rwanda, Senegal, South Sudan, Tunisia, and Uganda.
A total of 80 national teams from the four FIBA regions will compete in the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 qualifiers:
• Africa – 16 teams
• Americas – 16 teams
• Asia and Oceania – 16 teams
• Europe – 32 teams
These teams will all play in the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 qualifiers.
Two games per window will be played on a home-and-away basis in six windows, except for Africa, which will play in four qualifying windows, to qualify for the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027.
Six countries—Angola, Côte d’Ivoire, Egypt, Rwanda, Senegal, and Tunisia—are vying for the hosting rights of the four windows.
The qualifiers' draw will take place on May 13. The draw plays a crucial role in shaping the journey to the final tournament in Qatar.
During the last FIBA Basketball World Cup in 2023, Africa was represented by Angola, Cape Verde, Côte d’Ivoire, Egypt, and South Sudan.
Cape Verde and South Sudan made their World Cup debuts.
All African teams recorded one win each during the tournament; however, none advanced past the first round, leading them to participate in the 17th-32nd classification round.
The tournament concluded with Germany clinching their first-ever FIBA World Cup title by defeating Serbia 83-77 in the final.
Dennis Schröder played a pivotal role in Germany’s success, earning the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award for his outstanding performances throughout the competition.
