The Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) has unveiled its plans for 2025 and has set its sights on having a more robust Premier League for both men and women in 2025.
While speaking after their board meeting held at the Pan Ocean Corporation, FF Millennium Towers, 13/14 Ligali Ayorinde Avenue, Victoria Island, Lagos, NBBF President, Musa Kida, hinted that the board had just finished their last meeting for the year 2024, where they reviewed their activities for 2024 and validated the programs they hope to undertake in 2025.
Kida noted that for them, the Paris Olympics was their peak moment, where D’Tigress, Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, became the first African team to win a game at the Olympics and even reached the quarterfinals.
He also mentioned that it was at the Olympics that Nigeria’s coach, Rena Wakama, was fully recognized by the world of basketball, as she emerged as the best women’s coach at the Olympics, and Ezinne, the go-to player, was also named among the top 10 basketball players at the games.
Kida stated that their focus for next year will be the Afrobasket for women, where they will aim to achieve a consecutive quadruple victory at the competition.
According to him, this would be a great record to have, knowing fully well that D’Tigress has not lost a game at the continental level in the last six to seven years.
Kida also revealed that the leagues will be better organized in 2025, with more matches being played on a home-and-away basis. The league will be longer for more visibility, unlike in previous years when it struggled due to a lack of sponsors, which sometimes led to an abridged schedule or one that was patterned in line with agreements with team owners.
“We have just held our NBBF board meeting where we reviewed our activities for 2024 and validated our programs for 2025.
“The outgoing year has been great, with our peak moment being the impressive run of our women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.
“Our focus for 2025 will be the Afrobasket for women, while also ensuring we have more robust Premier Leagues in the coming year,” he concluded.
