NBBF denies unprofessionalism accusations on players' tryout

A board member of the Nigeria Basketball Federation, Victor Okoro says the accusation of unprofessionalism made against the NBBF by former D’Tigress player, Oderah Chisom is a misnomer.
Okoro was reacting to the viral news of the player's impromptu retirement from international basketball, which she ascribed to several unprofessional conducts by the NBBF.
In an exclusive chat, Okoro said that the federation had always been professional with the players at all times and despite her harsh criticism, she is acknowledged for giving her best to the nation.
The board member representing the Paramilitary stated that just because the NBBF is conducting Tryouts for the D’Tigress does not make them unprofessional as it is obtainable elsewhere even in the United States where Oderah started her basketball career.
Okoro opined that it is cost effective for the federation which is cash trapped, as there would be expenses in terms of flying the players around the world to come for training or physical assessment and other expenses, because the NBBF has not gotten back its funds used for prosecuting the 2021 FIBA Women AFROBASKET which was won by Nigeria.
The Basketball Administrator also disclosed that there has been a history of tryouts with the D’Tigress before as the NBBF previously organised an all-comers camping in 2017, where a lot of stars were discovered.
As for the poor method of communication between the team and the board, Okoro explained that lack of funds plays a critical role in the dissemination of information.
He noted that the venue of camping and number of players and coaches to be invited to the team cannot be disclosed until there is adequate money to prosecute such project.
Meanwhile, the tryouts in Lagos, Abuja and Chicago have all been completed and soon the Coach Rena Wakama-led Coaching crew will call up selected players from the trials for camping ahead of the team’s defence of the Afrobasket.
