NBA Western Conference: The ageing giants and emerging hope
Posted : 25 October 2023
The California NBA teams continue to draw attention, but the outlook is mixed. Golden State's efforts to rejuvenate the team haven't panned out as expected. While they've lost key young players like James Wiseman and Jordan Poole, Steve Kerr led them to an unexpected championship. The addition of Jonathan Kuminga and Kevon Looney could boost their front line, but they lack the iconic Splash Brothers.
Both the Lakers and Clippers are facing challenges due to aging rosters. DeAngelo Russell's performance hasn't lived up to expectations, and the Staples Center has cast a spell on him. The departure of Alex Caruso and Kentavius Caldwell-Pope, underrated guards, has been felt despite the addition of Russell Westbrook.
Denver remains competitive, with a relatively young roster. They've acquired promising rookies and retained their core players. However, Bruce Brown's departure is significant, and Denver's success hinges on their depth and potential acquisitions.
San Antonio, Oklahoma City, and Memphis are rebuilding with young talent, but they're not yet contenders. Sacramento has assembled an impressive supporting cast around Domantas Sabonis and De'Aaron Fox. While they may not be championship material, they could challenge teams like Denver.
The Western Conference lacks a clear favorite for the finals, with potential contenders including Phoenix, Utah, and Minnesota. However, the East appears to have stronger teams, setting the stage for a more competitive championship than the last one.
