NBA Trade Frenzy: Durant, Butler, and Key Roster Moves Shake Up Teams

Posted : 06 February 2025

A major trade involving Golden State, Phoenix, and Miami nearly saw Kevin Durant return to the Warriors, but Durant ultimately declined to reunite with the team. As a result, Golden State quickly shifted their focus, completing a different trade to land Jimmy Butler just before the trade window closed. This deal marks the conclusion of a lengthy saga involving Miami's repeated attempts to acquire the frustrated star, who is set to sign a two-year contract extension worth $111 million with the Warriors starting next summer.

In exchange for Butler, Golden State sent Andrew Wiggins, Kyle Anderson, and a top-10 protected first-round pick to Miami. The Warriors also parted ways with Dennis Schroder shortly after his controversial comments about the recent trade frenzy in the NBA. Despite these moves, Golden State managed to retain its promising young talents, including Jonathan Kuminga, Brandin Podzemski, and Moses Moody, leaving open the possibility of another deal before the trade deadline.

Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Lakers filled a gap in their center position by trading Dalton Kennecht, Cam Reddish, and an unprotected 2031 first-round pick to Charlotte in exchange for Mark Williams. Williams has had a strong season, averaging 16 points, nearly 10 rebounds, and over 1 block per game, though his injury history remains a concern. Lakers' general manager Rob Pelinka made the deal without parting with key assets like Austin Reeves, reshaping the team's roster for the remainder of the season.

In other trade moves, New Orleans sent Brandon Ingram to Toronto in exchange for Bruce Brown, Kelly Olynyk, and both a first-round and second-round pick. Sacramento also made a move to strengthen their roster, acquiring Jonas Valanciunas from Washington in exchange for two second-round picks and Sidi Sissoko, continuing their efforts to reshape the team following a previous trade for De'Aaron Fox.
