NBA Regular Season Ends with Playoff Drama as Warriors Fall to Play-In, Denver Clinches Fourth

Posted : 14 April 2025

The NBA regular season wrapped up on Sunday with all 30 teams in action, bringing clarity to the playoff and play-in pictures in both conferences. While the Eastern Conference standings had largely settled earlier, the Western Conference saw significant movement, particularly in a dramatic finish between the Clippers and the Warriors.

The Clippers' overtime win pushed Golden State into the play-in tournament, while Denver secured fourth place and home-court advantage in the first round after a decisive victory over Houston. Meanwhile, the Cavaliers claimed the top seed in the East for the first time since 2016, and Oklahoma City locked up the No. 1 seed in the West.

The Western Conference playoff matchups are now set: Oklahoma City will await the eighth seed from the play-in, Houston will face the Golden State/Memphis winner, the Lakers will take on Minnesota, and Denver will battle the Clippers. In the East, Cleveland will face the lower play-in winner, Boston meets either Orlando or Atlanta, New York plays Detroit, and Indiana goes up against Milwaukee.

The play-in games will determine the final two spots in each conference, following the standard format where the 7th seed plays the 8th for a direct playoff berth, while the loser gets another chance against the winner of the 9th vs 10th matchup.

Among Sunday’s games, notable results included a thrilling double-overtime win by Indiana over Cleveland, despite the Cavs holding a 27-point lead at one point. Minnesota secured its spot with a strong performance against Utah, led by Anthony Edwards’ 43-point display.

Denver dominated Houston from start to finish, underlining their playoff readiness after firing head coach Mike Malone earlier in the week. Meanwhile, Memphis fell hard to Dallas and slipped to the eighth seed, while Portland defeated the Lakers in a game with no playoff implications, as both sides rested their stars.
