NBA: Joel Embiid named MVP, Lakers win Western Conference semi-final opener
Posted : 03 May 2023
Joel Embiid of the Philadelphia 76ers has been selected the NBA's most valuable player for the 2022–23 campaign.
The two-time MVP Nikola Jokic of the Denver Nuggets finished second with 19, while the 29-year-old Cameroonian center took home 73 of the first-place votes.
The Milwaukee Bucks' Giannis Antetokounmpo came in third.
With a career-high season average of 33.1 points per game, Embiid won the NBA scoring championship for the second time in a row during the regular season.
Due to a knee ligament strain, the six-time All Star has missed the Sixers' previous two games, including Monday's victory against the Boston Celtics in Game 1 of their Eastern Conference Semifinal.
It is the fifth straight season that an international player has won the MVP trophy, which was renamed the Michael Jordan Trophy in December. Embiid is only the second African player to win the award, following Hakeem Olajuwon in the 1993–94 season.
