NBA investigates Philadelphia's James Harden absence in violation of New Load Management Act
Posted : 27 October 2023
The NBA's latest regulations mandate that teams feature their star players in nationally broadcast games. However, Philadelphia made a contentious decision not to include James Harden, the standout player from recent practices, in their away game against Milwaukee, prompting questions about potential fines.
On Thursday night, the NBA officially initiated an investigation into Philadelphia's actions to ascertain if they breached the New Load Management Act by sidelining James Harden for the game in Milwaukee. League spokesman Michael Buss revealed, "We're examining the circumstances surrounding Harden's absence tonight to determine if there's a valid reason for his non-participation."
The James Harden situation serves as a prominent test case for how the league enforces its new regulations aimed at ensuring the presence of star players in nationally televised games. According to the new rules, a team could face a fine of up to $100,000 for a first offense. These regulations require teams to implement a structured injury protocol and demand that players recognized as stars, including those who have participated in the All-Star Game or made All-Star teams in the past three years, play in games broadcast on national television. Philadelphia, however, did not adhere to this requirement in the case of the bearded superstar.
Harden had previously exercised his player option with Philadelphia and had hoped for a trade to the Clippers as per his request, which did not materialize. Consequently, this ongoing saga has led to several disciplinary issues on the part of the player and garnered criticism from media outlets during media day and in training over the past week and a half. The Sixers justified Harden's absence as being due to "personal matters."
