The Miami Heat tied the NBA Finals at one game each after inflicting the Denver Nuggets with their first home loss of the playoff series.
With 48.3 seconds left, Bam Adebayo made a pair of free throws to secure the 111-108 victory.
The Heat trailed by 15 points at the break, but they dominated their opponents 36-25 in the second half.
On Thursday, Miami will host game three of the best-of-seven series.
"Let's talk about effort," said Malone
"I mean, this is the NBA Finals and we're talking about effort. That's a huge concern of mine.
"We had guys out there that were just, whether feeling sorry for themselves for not making shots, or thinking they can just turn it on or off.
"This is not the pre-season. This is not the regular season. This is the NBA Finals. That to me is really, really perplexing, disappointing."
Gabe Vincent was the captain of the Heat, which is attempting to become the first eighth-seeded club to win the championship (23 points). In the victory, Adebayo and Jimmy Butler both scored 21 points.
For the Nuggets, Nikola Jokic led all scorers with 41 points, but coach Michael Malone was upset since it was their first home loss since March 30.
