In the first game of the Western Conference Finals, the Denver Nuggets defeated the Los Angeles Lakers thanks in large part to Nikola Jokic.
Jokic, a two-time NBA MVP, led Denver to a 132-126 victory and a 1-0 series lead with 34 points, 21 rebounds, and 14 assists.
In the fourth quarter, a Lakers comeback reduced the margin from 21 points to three, but a Jokic free throw secured the victory.
"A lot of our guys are battle-tested, we've been in a ton of close games," said Denver coach Michael Malone.
"I didn't think there was any panic - there was poise. Our guys looked at one another and realised what we had to do to close this game out."
Four other players scored in the double digits for the Nuggets, who also had 31 points from Jamal Murray.
At halftime, the Lakers led decisively, 72-54, but throughout the course of the second half, they gradually lost ground on their lead before coming up just short.
LeBron James scored 26 points, Austin Reaves 23, and Anthony Davis added another 23 for the Lakers, who were led by Davis' 40 points.
"We'll go back and look at the film tonight and see what we need to clean up, take a good look at that second half and see what went well, try to sustain the good stuff, and alleviate and repair the bad stuff," said Lakers coach Darvin Ham.
On Thursday, Denver will host game two of the series.
