Monty Williams accepts a record 6-year, $78.5M coaching contract with the Pistons

The Detroit Pistons and coach Monty Williams have reached an agreement on a six-year, $78.5 million contract, sources informed reporters. The NBA's highest coaching contract has been reached.
After four seasons as the Phoenix Suns' coach, Williams, 51, was let go earlier in May. After the Suns were defeated by the Denver Nuggets in the Western Conference playoffs, the decision was made.
Williams, who was voted NBA Coach of the Year in May 2022, led Phoenix to regular-season records of 194-115 (.628) and playoff victories of 27-19. In 2021–2022, the Suns won a franchise-high 64 games and advanced to the NBA Finals.
Williams will take over for Dwane Casey in Detroit, who left his position as the Pistons' coach in April to take a front-office position.
Detroit has been coached by Casey since 2018, yet in five seasons, the squad had a 121-263 record (.315). Detroit only reached the postseason once during his tenure, in the 2018–19 season, and lost in the opening round.
The Pistons have gone seven years without exceeding.500 in a season. Their most recent successful year was in 2015–2016.
