Milwaukee Bucks star Antetokounmpo won't sign contract extension unless commitment
Posted : 25 August 2023
Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo has stated that he will not be signing a contract extension when he becomes eligible next month. He expressed that he will only consider an extension when he's confident that the organization is committed to competing for a championship. In an interview with The New York Times, Antetokounmpo explained that he needs to know that everyone is aligned towards winning a championship and is willing to make sacrifices for it before he commits to an extension.
Antetokounmpo is currently in the third season of a five-year, $228 million supermax extension, and he has a player option after the 2024-25 season. Although the Bucks have the option to offer him a three-year, $173 million extension starting in September, Antetokounmpo emphasized that his decision will depend on whether the team is dedicated to pursuing a championship.
He expressed his desire to stay with one team throughout his career, similar to Kobe Bryant and Dirk Nowitzki. However, he stressed that winning a championship is his top priority. Antetokounmpo noted that while he wants a long-term association with the Bucks, his main focus is on winning another championship, and he wouldn't want to spend years with a team without achieving that goal.
Antetokounmpo's decision is influenced by the organization's commitment to winning. He mentioned that he experienced the best feeling when winning the NBA title in 2021 and that the desire to win championships surpasses any other consideration. He clarified that he doesn't want to spend his entire career with a team without adding more championship victories.
Milwaukee's recent playoff exit and changes in coaching staff have led to questions about the team's future. The Bucks are determined to create a competitive team, having re-signed key players like Brook Lopez and Khris Middleton. Antetokounmpo's decision will depend on how well the team aligns with his championship aspirations.
