Chicago Sky forward Michaela Onyenwere is set to compete in the Olympic Games in Paris as part of the Nigerian women's basketball team. Despite efforts by the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF), they were unable to secure Arike Ogunbowale from USA Basketball. Onyenwere, at 24 years old, will be a key addition to a rejuvenated D'Tigress squad, which also includes players like Elizabeth Balogun and the returning Ezinne Kalu.
The NBBF vice-president, Babs Ogunade, confirmed Onyenwere's participation, highlighting the strengthened squad heading to Paris. Ezinne Kalu, who previously lost her spot due to a player protest over unpaid allowances, is expected to make a comeback. Ogunade expressed confidence in the team's backcourt with the inclusion of Promise Amukamara and Kalu, comparing it favorably to the previous Olympics. He also mentioned other strong players like Liz Balogun and Amy Okonkwo.
Unfortunately, Dallas Wings' Arike Ogunbowale will not be part of the Nigerian team. Although she withdrew from the U.S. women's team, she cannot represent Nigeria, similar to Nneka Ogwumike's situation before the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo. Onyenwere, who was selected sixth overall in the 2021 WNBA Draft, had an impressive rookie season with New York Liberty, winning the Rookie of the Year award and making the All-Rookie Team of the Year.
Despite an injury-affected second season, Onyenwere bounced back with improved performance after being traded to Phoenix Mercury and then to Chicago Sky. Although her playing time has been limited in Chicago, she remains a significant asset for D'Tigress in the Olympics. Proud of her Nigerian heritage, Onyenwere has consistently expressed her honor in representing Nigeria, emphasizing the support and inspiration she receives from the Nigerian community. Nigeria faces a challenging pool in Paris, including top-ranked teams like France, Canada, and Australia, and will start their campaign against Australia on July 29.
