Michael Jordan's championship shoes smash auction records at $8 million

Posted : 04 February 2024

Breaking records beyond the court, the "dynasty collection" of Michael Jordan, the basketball legend, achieved a historic milestone in the auction world. Featuring singular shoes worn by Jordan in each of the Chicago Bulls' six championships, the collection fetched a staggering $8 million over the weekend, setting an unparalleled record for the sale of "second-hand" shoes.

It's crucial to note that these are individual shoes, not pairs, from the iconic Air Jordan series spanning 1991-1993 and 1996-1998, showcasing the pinnacle of the basketball maestro's career. Described as the most valuable Air Jordan shoes ever offered for sale, the collection gained acclaim for its uniqueness.

Originally part of the personal ritual between Jordan and Tim Haaland, the Chicago Bulls' director of public relations, these historic shoes held sentimental value. After each championship victory, Jordan would present one shoe from each pair to Haaland, signing it with a personal dedication.

What began as a superstition evolved into a cherished tradition. Subsequently, the shoes found their way to a private American collector, who, having acquired them, decided to put this unparalleled collection up for auction through the renowned platform, Sotheby's.

The Air Jordan brand, established in 1984 in collaboration with Nike during Jordan's debut NBA season, has since transcended time. Despite the basketball icon retiring over two decades ago, the enduring popularity and market dominance of the Air Jordan line continue to soar.

Last year, a pair of red and white Air Jordan shoes worn by Jordan during the 1998 NBA Finals sold for a notable $2.2 million at a Sotheby's auction. Notably, in October 2021, another pair of red and white Air Jordans, worn by Jordan in his fifth career game in 1984, fetched an impressive $1.47 million in a separate auction.
