Mavericks Are Fined $750K for Benching Players in a Crucial Game

The NBA penalized the Dallas Mavericks $750,000 for "behavior detrimental to the league" following an inquiry into the team's decision to rest many important players for the team's April 7 loss, which disqualified them from the play-in round.
The day after the Mavs rested All-Star guard Kyrie Irving, shooting guard Tim Hardaway Jr., small forward Josh Green, power forward/center Christian Wood, and power forward/center Maxi Kleber for the 115-112 defeat to the Chicago Bulls, the NBA launched an inquiry.
Before departing the game, All-Star guard Luka Doncic played the first 12 minutes and 35 seconds.
Coach Jason Kidd referred to "an organizational decision" prior to the game and credited Mavs owner Mark Cuban and general manager Nico Harrison.
The league determined that the Mavericks "violated the NBA's player resting policy and demonstrated through actions and public statements the organization's desire to lose the game in order to improve the chances of keeping its first-round pick" in this draft, according to a news release from the NBA.
"The Dallas Mavericks' decision to restrict key players from fully participating in an elimination game last Friday against Chicago undermined the integrity of our sport," Joe Dumars, NBA executive vice president/head of basketball operations, said.
"The Mavericks' actions failed our fans and our league."
The Mavericks' last payment for the 2019 Kristaps Porzingis deal with the New York Knicks is a top-10 protected selection. The clubs' tie for the 10th-best odds in the draft lottery were broken by the defeat to the Bulls. Doncic, Irving, and the majority of the Mavericks' usual rotation were all held out of Dallas' season-ending 138-117 defeat to the San Antonio Spurs.
