The organizers of the inaugural Musa Kida basketball competition for under-17 kids announced on Tuesday that the cadet championships will take place in Abesan Estate in December.
The inaugural edition will involve 8 teams drawn from the Ipaja environs.
Kida, who is the President of the Nigeria Basketball Federation, said the discovery of talents from grassroots was crucial to the development of the sport.
The basketball boss said the competition, which will be an annual event, will be fully funded by the Ahmadu Musa Kida (AMK) Foundation as part of its corporate social responsibility.
"We need to focus on grassroots and school sports. The talents are vastly enormous, waiting to be tapped for our club sides and national teams.
"Some of our top players started from grassroots, and we shouldn't abandon that section because it's key to sports development," he said.
The one-week event is being organized by Wonderland Sports, and registration is free for all participating teams.
