Luxembourg and Croatia win first-ever FIBA U18 Women's Championship title

Posted : 09 July 2023
It was an historic day for Luxembourg and Croatia as they secured their spots in the Final of the FIBA U18 Women's Championship, Division B. For Luxembourg, it was an extraordinary achievement as they reached their first-ever title game and guaranteed their first-ever medal.

The exceptional performance of Faith Ehi Etute played a crucial role in their thrilling 65-64 victory against Bosnia and Herzegovina, where she recorded a remarkable double-double with 33 points and 19 rebounds.

Etute's incredible contribution also included 6 steals and a game-winning block in the final seconds. Isa Hamalainen also played a vital role with 18 points, 9 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 steals, and 2 blocks.

In the other Semi-Finals matchup, Croatia earned their spot in the championship showdown with a hard-fought 45-41 win against Greece. The game was dominated by strong defensive efforts, and Petra Bozan's impressive performance with 13 points and 13 rebounds proved crucial in Croatia's victory. Lana Beslic also made a significant contribution with 10 points and 10 boards.

Unfortunately for Greece, their offensive struggles cost them the game, particularly their poor shooting from beyond the three-point line, where they missed 16 of their 18 attempts. Eleni Margelou was the only Greek player to reach double-digit scoring with 13 points.

Furthermore, both Greece and Bosnia and Herzegovina faced double disappointment as it was confirmed that the third-placed team would not be promoted from Division B. This decision was a result of Portugal's position in the bottom three of Division A, as they will host the tournament in 2024 and therefore avoid relegation.
