LeBron James Injured, Kevin Durant Sets Record as USA Advances to Olympic Semifinals

Posted : 07 August 2024

King James needed four stitches around his eye after taking an elbow during the game against Brazil, but his attitude afterward inspired his coach, Steve Kerr: "That's who he is, being the leading scorer is secondary to him." Kevin Durant also achieved an impressive milestone during this game. The USA team secured their spot in the semifinals of the Olympic basketball tournament with a convincing 122-87 victory over Brazil. However, the main story was the injury of LeBron James, the star of the American team and a prominent figure in basketball over the last decade and a half.

In the third quarter, while vying for a rebound, LeBron was accidentally elbowed in the eye by Georginho de Paula, causing him to grimace in pain. He had to leave the court and needed four stitches around his eye as a result. Despite the injury, LeBron reassured everyone about his condition, saying, "I'm fine, I'll play in the next game. I got elbowed in the face, it was an unintentional hit." Although he did not return to play that day, his resilience and positive attitude drew admiration from his teammates and the media.

USA coach Steve Kerr praised LeBron's commitment and selflessness, highlighting his role as a point forward. "He's the greatest scorer in NBA history, yet being the leading scorer is secondary to him," Kerr remarked. The game also saw Joel Embiid, who had faced criticism for his previous performances and decision to play for the USA instead of France, receiving praise. Embiid scored 14 points and grabbed 7 rebounds, showing significant improvement and control under the basket. NBC's website even welcomed Embiid back, noting his impressive performance and how it bolstered the team's strengths.

Additionally, Kevin Durant made history by becoming the all-time leading scorer for the USA in Olympic basketball, surpassing both male and female players with 494 points, overtaking Lisa Leslie. This milestone places Durant eighth among all national team scorers globally. The Americans, having defeated Brazil, now prepare to face Serbia in the semifinals, a team they already bested in the group stage. Meanwhile, the host nation France will compete against world champion Germany in the other semifinal matchup.
