LeBron, Bronny Make NBA History as Father-Son Duo in Lakers' Preseason Loss

Posted : 07 October 2024

The Los Angeles Lakers faced the Phoenix Suns in an NBA preseason game, losing 118-114, but the true highlight of the evening wasn't the scoreboard. History was made in Palm Springs, California, as LeBron James and his son, Bronny James, shared the court together for the first time, marking the debut of an NBA father-son duo in a professional game. This unique moment unfolded during the second quarter, captivating fans with the sight of the two Jameses playing side-by-side, a moment that blended legacy with fresh potential.

LeBron, now 39 years old and entering his 22nd NBA season, continues his tenure with the Lakers, while 20-year-old Bronny was drafted in the second round of the 2024 NBA Draft after a season at USC. LeBron made his preseason debut count, leading the Lakers with an impressive 19 points on 8-of-12 shooting in only 16 minutes. In contrast, Bronny, who had a modest performance in an earlier preseason game against the Timberwolves, struggled to find his rhythm this time, going scoreless in 13 minutes with just one attempted shot.

J.J. Redick, recently appointed as head coach of the Lakers, addressed concerns that the father-son pairing might be a mere publicity stunt. He assured the media that their collaboration wasn’t a "gimmick" but a meaningful opportunity, emphasizing his excitement and the honor he felt in witnessing history. Redick’s commitment to the Lakers' long-term goals was clear, as he viewed the James family connection as a way to foster team unity and elevate the Lakers' preseason efforts.

Elsewhere in preseason action, the Phoenix Suns saw modest performances from key players, with Kevin Durant tallying 6 points on 3-of-10 shooting in 14 minutes. Josh Okogie led the Suns with 15 points, contributing significantly to their victory. In another game, Karl-Anthony Towns unofficially debuted for the New York Knicks, who edged out the Charlotte Hornets 111-109. Towns finished with 10 points and 4 rebounds in 15 minutes, showcasing his potential impact on the Knicks’ frontcourt as he adapts to his new team.
