Posted : 30 July 2023
Latvia and Belgium both secured their places in the Final of the FIBA U18 European Championship 2023, Division B, and have the chance to vie for the coveted direct promotion spot in Division A for next summer.
Latvia, experiencing their second summer in Division B, advanced to the Final by defeating Montenegro 96-83 in the Semi-Finals held in Matosinhos. A decisive 27-12 second-quarter surge propelled Latvia ahead, and they maintained control throughout the rest of the game.
Roberts Blums led the scoring with 18 points, supported by Edvards Svalbe's 16 points and Juris Vitols' impressive contribution of 14 points and 7 assists. Remarkably, Latvia finished as Division A runners-up in 2018 when they hosted the tournament, and now they have their sights set on making their return.
On the other hand, Belgium secured their spot in the title game with a convincing 85-62 victory against Austria. Although Austria led by eight points in the second quarter, Belgium turned the tide by embarking on a remarkable 29-0 run, setting the foundation for their triumph.
Noah Meeusen led the charge with 20 points, and Adedayo Polet and Lukljan Zecevic each added 15 points for the Belgian team. Despite a valiant effort, Aleksej Kostic (16 points) and Imran Suljanovic (13 points) combined for 29 points in the losing effort.
Having the chance to compete in Division A for the first time since 2014, Belgium is determined to claim victory in the Final.
They finished third in 2018, but due to promotion restrictions, only two teams were elevated that summer.
Meanwhile, Montenegro and Austria will face off for third place in the competition on Sunday.
In other Division B matches, Great Britain rebounded from their Quarter-Finals loss to Montenegro to defeat Romania, earning them a matchup against Netherlands for fifth place.
Netherlands secured their position by defeating Slovakia. Additionally, hosts Portugal will contend with Bulgaria for ninth place in the tournament.
