Lakers unveil Kobe Bryant statue: A towering tribute to NBA legend's enduring legacy

Posted : 09 February 2024

In a poignant tribute to NBA legend Kobe Bryant, the Los Angeles Lakers have unveiled a 19ft bronze statue outside the Crypto.com Arena. The statue, weighing 4,000lb, immortalizes Bryant in his iconic number eight jersey, commemorating the player who spent his entire illustrious career with the Lakers.

The unveiling ceremony brought together Lakers legends including Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Magic Johnson, Jerry West, and Derek Fisher, along with former head coach Phil Jackson and Bryant's widow, Vanessa. The statue serves as a powerful symbol of excellence and inspiration, encapsulating the impact Bryant had on the game.

Vanessa Bryant, reflecting on her late husband's legacy, emphasized Kobe's enduring influence on the current generation of NBA stars. Quoting one of Bryant's memorable phrases, she said, "Leave the game better than you found it and when it comes time for you to leave, leave a legend. And that he did."

The emotional event marked the first of three statues dedicated to Bryant, with upcoming installations featuring him in his number 24 jersey and a depiction of Bryant alongside his daughter Gianna.

Following the statue unveiling, the Lakers donned their 'Black Mamba' jerseys, co-designed by Bryant, during their game against the Denver Nuggets. Despite the tribute, the Lakers faced a 114-106 defeat, with Jamal Murray leading the Nuggets to their seventh successive win over the Lakers. Anthony Davis and LeBron James contributed with 32 and 25 points, respectively.

Meanwhile, across the league, Stephen Curry's Golden State Warriors secured a 131-109 victory against the Indiana Pacers, with Curry setting a new NBA record by landing 11 of 16 three-point shots in a single game. Other notable wins were notched by the Minnesota Timberwolves, Detroit Pistons in overtime, Dallas Mavericks, Orlando Magic, Cleveland Cavaliers, Chicago Bulls, and Phoenix Suns in a night filled with compelling NBA action.
