Lakers increase Anthony Davis' $186 million contract

Posted : 05 August 2023
The Los Angeles Lakers have extended the contract of their 30-year-old center, Anthony Davis, for another three years. The deal is worth a staggering $186 million, with an average annual salary of $62 million, making it the most expensive contract extension in league history.

Despite suffering from numerous injuries in recent years, Davis has remained a key player for the team, and his performance alongside LeBron James has been instrumental in the Lakers' success. His willingness to waive his player option for the 2024-25 season shows his commitment to the team and his desire for a higher salary over the next three years.

Over the next five years, Davis is set to earn a total of $270 million. While his injury history raises some concerns, the Lakers' general manager, Rob Pelinka, decided to secure Davis' services, especially with uncertainty surrounding how many more years LeBron James will play in the NBA.

Since joining the Lakers in 2019 through a trade from New Orleans, Davis has been a crucial part of the team, helping them win an NBA championship in the Orlando bubble. Last year's playoffs showcased his brilliance, averaging 26 points and 12.5 rebounds per game.

Davis has an impressive track record, being a four-time All-NBA first-team selection and achieving an average of 25 points and two blocks per game in at least five seasons, a feat only surpassed by Shaquille O'Neal and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Additionally, he became the third Lakers player to record 50 blocks in a single playoff game, joining the ranks of the aforementioned legends.
