The Island Wolves defeated 9-2-5ERS 40–35 on Sunday in the 2025 maiden edition of a basketball tournament held on Lagos Island.
The game, hosted at the Campos Mini Stadium, attracted a large turnout of basketball enthusiasts who were thrilled by the performances of both teams.
Island Wolves is a Lagos Island-based basketball academy, while 9-2-5ERS is from Victoria Island.
After the match, Daniela Odike, Captain of 9-2-5ERS, expressed gratitude to the organizers for providing them with the opportunity and platform to showcase their basketball talents.
Odike stated that, although her team tried their best to win, they were defeated by a better side.
“We will prepare better next time. In fact, we have identified our mistakes and weaknesses, but we assure our fans that 9-2-5ERS will perform better in the future.
“We call on the government and other stakeholders to create more initiatives like this to keep the youth engaged,” the captain said.
Nicholas Anyamene, one of the tournament organizers and the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of High Octane Media, expressed delight with the event's success.
Anyamene urged corporate organizations to emulate the event's sponsors in discovering and nurturing young talents to grow basketball in the country.
“We need more corporate organizations to follow Milo’s example and help develop young talents who will advance the sport and strengthen the national basketball team,” he said.
Funmilola Oyewole, the Sports Marketing Manager at Nestle Milo, emphasized that the tournament was not just about winning but about fostering unity and sharing love among participants.
Oyewole added that the event would inspire participants and give them hope that basketball could help them achieve greater things in life.
Similarly, Lawrence Okonji, another sponsor, highlighted the importance of such competitions for basketball development in Nigeria, noting that many young talents are eager for platforms to showcase their skills.
