Knicks, Nets Strike Historic Trade Ahead of NBA Draft

Posted : 26 June 2024

On the eve of the NBA draft, a historic trade unfolded between the Knicks and Nets, marking their first major transaction since 1983. According to sources, New York has agreed in principle to acquire Mikal Bridges from Brooklyn in exchange for Bojan Bogdanovic, along with an extensive package of draft assets. This includes five first-round picks spread over several years, a first-round pick swap, and a second-round selection.

In return, Brooklyn will receive a substantial haul of draft picks, including unprotected selections in 2025, 2027, 2029, and 2031, along with a top-four protected first-round pick in 2025 via the Milwaukee Bucks and a 2025 second-rounder. The deal underscores the Nets' strategic pivot, leveraging their assets acquired in previous trades to reshape their roster and future prospects.

Mikal Bridges, renowned for his durability and defensive prowess, joins the Knicks after a standout season with Brooklyn, where he averaged 19.6 points per game. The trade reunites Bridges with former Villanova teammates Jalen Brunson, Josh Hart, and Donte DiVincenzo, highlighting the Knicks' intent to bolster their roster with championship pedigree and versatility on the perimeter.

This blockbuster marks the fifth trade between the New York franchises since the Nets' inception in 1976, signaling a significant moment in both teams' ongoing strategies and ambitions. As the NBA offseason unfolds, the Knicks remain focused on retaining key players like OG Anunoby while enhancing their competitive edge in the Eastern Conference.
