Jordan picks 18-year-old Nigerian for Hornets

Posted : 23 June 2023
Nigerian basketball sensation James Nnaji has reached a significant milestone in his career as he enters the NBA through the draft process.

At just 18 years old, Nnaji is set to embark on his professional journey with the esteemed Charlotte Hornets, a formidable team in the Eastern Conference.

Having previously played for Barcelona Basketball in the Spanish ACB league, Nnaji's talent and potential caught the attention of none other than NBA legend Michael Jordan, who, as the outgoing owner of the Charlotte Hornets, handpicked Nnaji to join the franchise.

While initially chosen by the Boston Celtics in the third round of the 2023 NBA Draft, Nnaji's destiny swiftly led him to the Charlotte Hornets through a trade.

It's important to note that Nnaji's youth is a significant factor in his development. With his 19th birthday not arriving until August, he is undoubtedly viewed as a project for the future.

As a rookie center hailing from Nigeria, Nnaji's journey began when he was originally selected by the Detroit Pistons as the No. 31 pick.

However, through subsequent trades, the Hornets secured his talents by offering the Celtics the Nos. 34 and 39 picks.

Standing tall at 6 feet 11 inches, Nnaji possesses an impressive 7-foot-5 wingspan, making him a formidable presence on the court.

Despite receiving limited playing time during his stint with FC Barcelona last season, Nnaji managed to exhibit his athleticism and finesse around the basket, leaving glimpses of his potential.

Given the Hornets' existing roster, including contracted players like Mark Williams and Nick Richards, Nnaji is expected to spend some time in the G League at the beginning of his NBA career.

This strategic move allows him to further hone his skills and gain valuable experience before fully integrating into the Hornets' lineup.

It's worth highlighting the significance of Nnaji's draft selection, as it comes on the heels of a distressing incident.

While en route to assist Barcelona in their pursuit of the Spanish ACB title, Nnaji faced racial abuse from Real Madrid fans.

Despite the challenges he encountered, his selection in the NBA draft showcases his resilience and determination to succeed at the highest level of basketball.

As James Nnaji transitions into the NBA with the Charlotte Hornets, the Nigerian prodigy brings forth a wealth of talent, potential, and a fervent desire to make his mark in the world of professional basketball.

Fans and analysts alike eagerly anticipate witnessing Nnaji's growth and the impact he will undoubtedly have on the game.
