Nikola Jokic's incredible 56-point performance was not enough to secure a win for the Denver Nuggets as they fell 113-122 to the Washington Wizards. Jokic, the three-time MVP, recorded the second-most points in NBA history for a single game, just behind David Thompson’s 73 points from 1978. Despite his individual brilliance, the Nuggets couldn't overcome the Wizards, who led throughout the game and ended their 16-game losing streak at home in the Capital One Arena.
Washington was led by shooting guard Jordan Poole, who scored 39 points, including a career-high nine three-pointers. Justin Champagnie contributed 23 points, and Jonas Valanciunas added a solid 20 points, 12 rebounds, and five assists. The Wizards, who hadn't won since October 30, were without Alexandre Sarr, while the Nuggets were missing key players due to injury, including Jamal Murray (hamstring) and Aaron Gordon (calf).
In addition to his career-high points, Jokic also registered 16 rebounds and eight assists in the losing effort. This performance came just two days after Jokic surpassed NBA legend Magic Johnson, moving into third place on the all-time list for triple-doubles with 139. However, the defeat left the Nuggets in ninth place in the Western Conference with a 10-11 record, having dropped 10 of their first 21 games.
In other NBA action, Evan Mobley scored a career-high 41 points to lead the Cleveland Cavaliers to a 116-102 win over the Charlotte Hornets. Meanwhile, the Memphis Grizzlies defeated the reigning champions, the Boston Celtics, the Detroit Pistons triumphed over the New York Knicks, and the Dallas Mavericks secured a victory over the Toronto Raptors.
