Joel Embiid commits to Team USA for 2024 Paris Olympics, aims to boost America's basketball dominance

Joel Embiid, the NBA's reigning MVP, has officially committed to playing for Team USA at the 2024 Paris Olympics. He made this decision after meeting with Team USA executive director Grant Hill following discussions with representatives from the French national team. Embiid, who holds French and American citizenship, expressed that choosing between the three countries was difficult but ultimately decided on representing the United States.
Embiid's decision to play for Team USA was driven by his desire to help the U.S. regain its position as a dominant force in international basketball. Team USA faced disappointment in the FIBA World Cup in the Philippines, failing to medal for the second consecutive time, which led to several superstar players, including Stephen Curry and LeBron James, expressing interest in joining the team for the 2024 Olympics.
The 7-foot Embiid's addition to the roster addresses the Americans' weaknesses in size and defense, as he is a six-time All-Star and three-time All-Defensive Team selection. His commitment is seen as a significant boost for Team USA's chances in the upcoming Olympics.
Embiid's decision was also influenced by his family, particularly his 3-year-old son, Arthur, who was born as an American citizen in 2020. The opportunity to win a gold medal and represent the USA in front of his family played a pivotal role in his choice.
While France had hoped to persuade Embiid to play for their side as the host nation for the 2024 Olympics, Cameroon, his home country, has yet to qualify for the Games. Embiid's decision adds strength and depth to Team USA, and he is excited to contribute to the sport of basketball on the international stage.
