Ja Morant found himself in trouble again after using an imaginary gun gesture to celebrate a 3-pointer, prompting him to adopt a new make-believe celebration to avoid further controversy. Recently fined $75,000 for mimicking the action of pointing a long gun after a basket, Morant switched to a new routine during the Memphis Grizzlies' 141-125 loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves.
In this latest celebration, he pretended to pull a pin and throw an invisible grenade, even covering his ears after the windmill-like motion.
Morant's gesture came after the NBA imposed the fine for his previous finger-gun celebrations. The league had warned him about the potential negative impact of such actions, and the fine followed after Morant performed the gesture during a game against the Miami Heat.
His actions raised concerns due to a history of incidents involving firearms, including a 25-game suspension earlier in the season for waving a gun in a car and an earlier eight-game suspension for a similar incident in a nightclub. Morant commented that he wasn't surprised by the fine, acknowledging his history with these types of actions.
While his teammates, like Vince Williams Jr., expressed support for the new celebration, with Williams suggesting that it would save Morant money, the grenade gesture did not go unnoticed by critics.
