Ja Morant: NBA Star Gets Eight Games Without Pay in Suspension After Gun Incident
Posted : 09 April 2023
In response to a video showing Memphis Grizzlies guard Ja Morant brandishing a gun in a Colorado nightclub, the NBA has suspended him for eight games without pay.
The NBA claimed that Morant's behavior was "detrimental to the league" and that he was also inebriated.
On Saturday, March 4, the 23-year-old All-Star guard apologized on his Instagram page after the live broadcast.
Adam Silver, the head of NBA, stated Morant's behavior was "irresponsible, reckless and potentially very dangerous".
He added: "It also has serious consequences given his enormous following and influence, particularly among young fans who look up to him."
After meeting with Morant on Wednesday in New York, the commissioner issued a statement in which he stated hhe has expressed true sorrow and remorse for his behavior.
"Ja has also made it clear to me that he has learned from this incident and that he understands his obligations and responsibility to the Memphis Grizzlies and the broader NBA community extend well beyond his play on the court."
With a few restrictions, such as possession while intoxicated, carrying a pistol is lawful in Colorado.
The Glendale Police Department did not discover enough proof to bring any criminal charges.
Morant has not played since the incident, which happened hours after the Grizzlies' 113-97 loss to the Denver Nuggets, while the NBA conducted an investigation.
He has already missed five games, and as the suspension is backdated, he will be allowed to return against the Dallas Mavericks on 21 March.
